Water Filtration 101
Clean water matters. We break down the different filtration systems available and help you choose the right one for your kitchen.
Why Filtration Has Become a Standard Request
Clean water used to mean a pitcher filter in the refrigerator. Today homeowners have real options, and most of them are simpler to install and maintain than people expect. Water filtration is one of the most requested upgrades we see during a kitchen remodel, and for good reason: it affects how your water tastes, how your appliances hold up over time, and in some homes, what you and your family are actually drinking every day.
Not every filtration system does the same job, though. Before choosing one, it helps to understand what each type actually filters and where it fits in your home.
The best filtration system is not the most expensive one. It is the one that matches what is actually in your water.
The Three Systems Homeowners Ask About Most
Carbon filtration is the most common starting point. It attaches under the sink or to the faucet itself and is effective at improving taste and odor by removing chlorine and some sediment. It is the least expensive option and the easiest to maintain, with filter cartridges typically swapped every few months.
Reverse osmosis systems go further. Water is pushed through a fine membrane that removes a much wider range of contaminants, including lead and certain minerals. Reverse osmosis is usually installed under the kitchen sink with its own dedicated faucet, and it is a strong choice for households with specific water quality concerns.
Whole-house filtration treats water as it enters your home, before it reaches any tap, shower or appliance. It is a bigger investment but it protects plumbing and water heaters over time, and it means every fixture in the house benefits, not just the kitchen sink.

Not Sure Which System Fits Your Home
Water quality varies by neighborhood and even by street. Ask a Gerhard's design consultant about testing your water before you choose a system, so you are solving the problem you actually have rather than guessing.
Choosing the Right Fit
A quick way to think about it:
- Carbon filtration for better taste and odor at a low cost
- Reverse osmosis for broader contaminant removal at the kitchen tap
- Whole-house filtration to protect plumbing and every fixture in the home
Whichever system you choose, professional installation matters. A properly installed filtration system protects your investment and keeps the water flowing the way it should for years, not just months.
